Lansky fish hook sharpener - a favorite tool!

Lansky fish hook sharpener, like an Arkansas Stone for knives, but with 3 v-shaped channels.

I use it to smooth the ends of all gauges, from 30 to 10, they all fit. A few drags back and forth and wire ends are smoothed out. A few more drags while twisting, it's rounded nicely. Enough drags carefully aimed and you'll have a nice sharp pin. Beats cup burrs all to pieces for the kind of work I've done thus far...
This little baby was under $3 at Academy Sports and well worth the trip to find it. Here's a link directly to the page on Lansky's website, with video -

Bluddy Blogger won't let the link work, let's try this - [click here]

If the link breaks AGAIN, try searching the Lansky website for fish hook sharpener and look for this style. You want one that is a sharpening stone with V slots, not metal coated with diamond dust. That dust wears off and then you are left with a useless chunk of metal.

There have been reports of finding it at independent fishing shops and on Amazon.

What a great find for a tool! I'm going to look in the fishing shops here for one. I had been thinking about a cup burr but tools seem to cost and there are other things I need more, like glass..smile...Ziggy

  2. Really appreciate your sharing this gem of wisdom. Found a sharpening stone at Harbor Freight for $1.99. It has been very useful to use on wire ends instead of a file.

  4. I found out about the Lansky fish hook sharpener from you about 2 or 3 years ago at WWJ Sherry and I must say I love it. I have told friends about it and even give it as gifts. Seems the only place I have been able to find it is at their website -- then the PH cost more than the product , not much and well worth it . I have learned a lot from you . Thanks for the advice....

  5. Bummer about the shipping fee, but since they last for YEARS and do so many wire tasks, it's still worth the price. hehehe
Amazon has had them, higher price than directly from Lansky, but they "free shipping on $25" was on it, so that helps. Last time I looked, there were only a few listed, don't know if they will run out or re-order.

How sweet you are to give them as gifts!!!

  8. Still loving my Lansky! That center groove is a nice wide U now, much easier to fit that 10g.
